Jyotisha Basics
The Vedic birth chart — the Janma Kundali — is divided into twelve Bhavas (houses), each governing a distinct domain of life. Reading a chart is, in essence, the art of understanding how the energies of the nine Grahas (planets) express themselves through the twelve houses, and what this reveals about the arc and texture of a life.
The first house, or Lagna, is the most important house in the chart. It represents the physical body, personality, appearance, vitality, and one’s overall approach to life. The sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth becomes the Lagna, colouring everything that follows. The second house governs wealth, family, speech, and early childhood nourishment. The third house rules courage, siblings, short journeys, communication, and effort.
The fourth house is the seat of domestic happiness, mother, property, and the heart. A strong fourth house brings emotional security and rootedness. The fifth house governs children, creativity, intelligence, romance, and past life merit (Purva Punya). The sixth house covers enemies, debts, illness, and service — challenging in many respects but powerful for those in healing or competitive professions.
The seventh house is the house of partnership, marriage, and public interaction. The eighth house governs transformation, longevity, hidden matters, inheritance, and esoteric knowledge — intense, deep, and often associated with upheaval that ultimately leads to rebirth. The ninth house is the Dharma Bhava, governing father, guru, higher knowledge, long journeys, and fortune. The tenth house is the Karma Bhava, the house of profession, reputation, and one’s contribution to the world.
The eleventh house governs income, elder siblings, social networks, and the fulfilment of desires. The twelfth house, often feared, is actually the house of liberation (Moksha), foreign lands, dreams, and the dissolution of the ego — a profoundly spiritual placement when well-aspected. Understanding the twelve houses is the foundation of all Vedic chart interpretation.
